Staff and customers at Chepstow House are looking forward to welcoming visitors to an Open Day on Wednesday 12th November from 10am-4pm. Chepstow House is one of the many schemes managed by Hanley based charity Brighter Futures and works exclusively with women who have offended or are at risk of doing so.
The centre is a one stop shop providing women with easy access to the services they need to deal with their problems. Partner organisations include the Citizens Advice Bureau, CRI and Aquarius who are part of the multi-agency team who provide help and advice on issues such as debt, housing and substance misuse. Women may be given a court order as an alternative to a prison sentence to attend Chepstow House, or they can self-refer.
Through Brighter Futures Academy women can get help to improve their literacy and numeracy, parenting, take part in volunteering to build their employability and add to their CVs. Women can also get specialist support and therapies including counselling or art to help them deal with mental illness or trauma, with which many women’s lives are troubled.
Chepstow House customer Rachel tells us more: ‘I was given a suspended sentence and told to come to Chepstow House. I wanted to do the parenting classes that they do here so I can prove to social services that I can look after my son. I have done all the courses I can and have really enjoyed them. I am learning to control my anger and never want to offend again.’
Women are offered a personal support worker, to help them think about the most effective way out of their situation and support them as they make that difficult journey.
Rachel continued: ‘Coming to Chepstow has given me a purpose and I am loads more motivated than I was. At the moment I am in a shared house and living on ESA but would rely like to get my own tenancy. I am adding to my CV all the time and am looking forward to getting a job.’
Members of the public interested in finding out more will be made very welcome to the Open Day at Chepstow House, Bryan Street, Hanley on Wednesday 12th November from 10am-4pm.
