What is an Almshouse?
An almshouse is a unit of residential accommodation (usually a house or flat) which belongs to a charity, is provided exclusively to meet the charity’s purposes (for example, the relief of financial need or infirmity) and is occupied or is available for occupation under a licence by a qualified beneficiary.
Applications
All applicants need to have an additional support need above and beyond ‘homelessness or risk-of homelessness’ this could include:
- Learning disability or difficulty
- Mental Health
- Alcohol or drug use/ dependency
- Addiction
Referrals are to be made to the service from the local , mental health services, local social care team or from surrounding authorities working in partnership with Walsall Council.
Alternatively, applications can be considered by filling in Brighter Futures Referral Form.

Housing Sustainment Offer
Our Housing Sustainment Services aim to ensure customers have the necessary support and skills to maintain their homes, prevent homelessness, and build stronger support networks for better life management.
Customers working with our Housing Sustainment Services will agree to a personalised program, offered regularly (based on need/risk). This program is designed to equip individuals with the tools to successfully sustain their tenancies and avoid homelessness.
Our Housing Sustainment Workers will help customers develop a Hope Plan each year. This plan encourages customers to think about their goals, recognise any challenges, and work with our team to identify practical steps to achieve them. Support may include assistance with:
- Building life skills
- Budgeting advice and signposting to local support services
- Help with form filling and communicating with utility companies
- Addressing benefit anomalies
- Connecting with Brighter Futures to ensure the customer’s voice is heard
- Communicating with professionals, such as the Police, GPs, or hospitals
- Accessing transport and educational opportunities (training, apprenticeships)
- Building positive social networks by connecting with local hubs or support groups
